Lindy Hop (Swing)

Lindy Hop is a dance style that was popularized in New York by African American dancers in the ballroom known as the Savoy Ballroom.

The name “Lindy Hop” was born in 1927 at the Savoy Ballroom during a dance contest. The dance (which included jumps and stunts) got its name because of the famous flight of Charles Lindbergh, which crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Lindy would be the diminutive of Lindbergh and hop, which would refer to the “jump” from one coast to another in the ocean.

Lindy Hop spread throughout the US, but it wasn’t until the August 23, 1943, issue of Life Magazine that he declared it a “national dance” that totally catapulted it to success. Over time, Lindy Hop evolved into a variety of swing styles including West Coast, jive, Boogie Woogie, Balboa, Wendy, and more.
