Twerk is a dance where controlled hip movements are performed, tilting the pelvis in different positions and speeds, with the intention of shaking the buttocks to generate vibrations, bounces, circles and shakes to the rhythm of the music. As it is danced, other variables can be added to increase the complexity, it is not a dance that is governed by a choreography, it can be improvised and anyone can dance it.
Currently this type of dance is promoted as a fun way to do aerobic exercise, where we keep our body active and strengthen our muscles, allowing us to burn approximately between 400 and 600 calories in one hour of class.
This dance is part of what is known as ‘Bounce’ culture, it is a type of music derived from hip-hop, born in New Orleans in the late 1980s and early 1990s, this rhythm has originated the famous ‘ Booty-shaking dance’, which has subsequently been named as Twerk; and is closely related to the empowerment of the LGBT community.
In Twerk there is no gender differentiation, nor is there a regulatory body, it is a daring and fun dance that empowers, where we are all equal.
