Zumba is a mix of Latin rhythms – salsa, meringue, flamenco or bachata – and aerobic exercise that has become the fashionable routine for losing weight.

It is a fitness discipline devised by a Colombian, Alberto ‘Beto’ Pérez, and its name is a derivative of the word rumba, which is how Colombians colloquially call the holidays.

They claim that the key to zumba being the star exercise for losing weight is due to the mix of fast and slow rhythms combined with a series of exercises, at the same time as we lose weight we tone our muscles. But regardless of whether those attending their classes lost weight or not, what Alberto Pérez wanted was for them to enjoy the exercise and feel good about themselves, and ultimately be happy; that attending classes to exercise was a real party.
