Born in Kyiv, based in Barcelona, Alina Sokulska is an international dance artist, choreographer, performer, instructor and researcher. Through inspiration, deep research and more than 12 years of practicing jazz, social and urban dances, in a mix with contemporary dance techniques and movement research concepts, Alina's style crystallized as one with a strong presence of footwork, body isolations, sophisticated musicality and abstract narration. Her improvisational approach to dance has been shaped from her experience of collaborating with jazz musicians and performing live improvisational music, with her dance language being influenced and shaped by their structures and principles.
Alina is currently collaborating with dance and music events, music bands, working on experimental performance stage pieces, as well as sharing her methodology with her group Giant Steps for professional and amateur dancers. He is refining his master's degree in choreography at the Conservatori Superior de Dansa, Institut del Teatre (Diputació Barcelona). In addition, Alina is the founder and curator of Evolution Solo Weekend, a festival and platform for social dance education since 2012, and is conducting her doctoral research on performance art and literary theory at the Comparative Literature department at the University of Barcelona.
For Alina, dance is a tool, not a purpose. An ephemeral incarnation of the cycles of life, where the body as a dynamic subject captures a moment that is constantly changing.
